Matthew Ulrich

Matthew Ulrich

Our beloved classmate, Matthew Ulrich (some of us called him simply "Matty"),passed away, earlier this year (2018) sometime in February, we believe of the vagaries of prostate cancer.  He lived in Seattle, Washington with his wife, Georgene.  But what a wonderful life Matt lived!

Matt entered St. Louis Park High School in 1956, coming to us from De La Salle.  He lettered in Football and Baseball as a senior and was a member of the Letterman's Club.  He also sang with the Glee Club.

Matt was selected as the ‘Most Mischievous’ individual in our class by his classmates. He went far beyond that limiting designation, according to those who knew him well in high school.

Matt, like many of us, married early.  A young woman from North High, Georgene Delmonico, claimed Matt's attention and affection and they were married in early 1963.  Their union eventually blessed the world with two children: Todd and Kim.

Matt worked selling and wholesaling sports memorabilia in the Seattle area. He became close to many sports figures at the University of Washington and the Seattle Seahawks.

His hobby was golf but when his wife was asked, “Georgene, what really got Matt's motorrunning?"  Her answer was, "His faith!"

Matt attended mass each day.  But that faith was taken far afield outside the walls of their parish.
Young women, frightened, young and pregnant who had been told that abortion was their only hope were counseled by both Matt and Georgene to consider life. To their great credit, many did. In fact, their websites are still active in giving ongoing doorways to these young women to discover the truth.
To better understand what Matt was all about in his later years it is worth a few minutes time to look at the two websites that were a part of his real life work: www.prolifewashington.info and www.seattlehelpers.org

Matt was an active participant as a grandfather, welcoming his grandchildren over each Sunday for dinner as well as vacationing with them over the years. Also, like many of us, Matt was an enthusiastic supporter at their hockey games and other sporting events.

Those of us who partied danced and played with Matt probably wouldn’t have guessed that 60 years later his funeral mass would have been attended by 500 people nor that it would have been celebrated by 6 priests. Georgene said that it was a beautiful service set on a snowy day in February. Her final comment concerning his passing was, “I miss him deeply, but the time here is so very short and the eternity we will spend together will never end.”

After Matt’s passing his son Todd has started the Matt Ulrich Memorial Golf Tournament to be played on Father’s day each year. :0)
God bless you Matt!!
