Donald Magrew

Donald Magrew

Magrew, Donald D. Born 07/06/1940 in Illinois, and passed away in his Maple Grove home on 09/14/2020 at age 80.

Don Graduated in 1958 from St. Louis Park High School.  He worked at Penny's Supermarket, and at Frito Lay in sales, retiring in 2005 after 35 years with that company. He served in the Air Force from 1963-1969.

He loved sports, and encouraged kids to participate in them (he coached youth Babe Ruth). He loved golf, and played in Men's Leagues at Meadowbrook G.C. and later at Pheasant Acres G.C.  Back in high school at SLP Don was on the football team in our sophomore and junior years and he played baseball as a sophomore.  It was said of Don Magrew that he and studies did not mix well.  Although by his own admission, studies may not have been his strong suit in high school, he proclaimed that he learned so much throughout his life.  That's likely true for all of us.

Don managed Babe Ruth and Pony Colt baseball teams in St. Louis Park for 13 years, while he worked at Penny's Supermarket.  In that way he gave back to his community.

Don met his wife, Kathy, when they both worked at Penny's. They wed on 01/18/1969. They had no children.  They shared a love of the North Shore, nature, animals, and quiet times together. Above all else, Don was hard-working, honest, kind and gentle.  In his later years Don took up Mandolin lessons and enjoyed crafts such as making jewelry and building benches.  Don was a huge hockey fan and had season tickets for the U. of M. Gophers.  Don proclaimed that he had no regrets and lived his life in his own way.

Don's family are so grateful for Dr. Mark Prebonich and his staff, joined in August by the staff of North Memorial's In-Home Hospice program. Don is survived by Kathy and their two kitties Max and Samantha, siblings: Susan Engene (John Connelly), Jim (Jan) and Nita Hill (Craig), & the many nieces & nephews whom he loved so much. Special thanks to sis-in-law Wendy Christenson, his Scrabble partner who also helped with his care.

No funeral service will be held due to CoVid19. Please contact Kathy at 763-424-5589 to request a memorial brochure. No flowers or plants please. Arrangements through Cremation Society of Brooklyn Park. cremationsocietyofmn.com
